Pond Yachts

Pond yachts

Pond yachts are small boats built to sail like real sailboats, powered only by the wind. The sail can be ‘set’ before the boat is released on the water, which will dictate the direction the boat sails in. Some have ‘vanes’ to help the boat remain on a specific course whereas others are simpler designs that may regularly change direction. At Clapham Model Yacht Club we have a range of traditional pond yachts which are available to use for free, helping children and adults to understand the physics behind sailing and can be a great introduction to both sailing and science. Our pond yachts are available every Sunday from 11-3 and while we happily accept donations, they are free to use for anyone and everyone who wants to try this timeless tradition.

Teaching with Toys

If you are a school or home educator and would like to use the pond yachts as a teaching tool, we have a ‘schools groups’ session available to book, with lesson plans to use in conjunction with the use of our yachts. We cover a range of curriculum content with fun sessions that bring learning to life with tangible hands on experiences. If you are interested in using a yacht as a teaching tool please email claphammodelyachtclub@gmail.com
